Middle Ages’ books of illumination, or illustrated manuscripts, were the apogee of visual intimacy. Because of their relative small size they had to be seen from close, sometimes held in the hands of the viewer. All the features of their characters, the architecture, the flora and fauna, and the landscape in general give an intimate perspective of reality. Through researched gestures, postures, facial expressions, deliberate simplification, and charming distortions, they wrap up the world into a fold of proximity and tenderness. Since both the rubricator (writer) and the miniator (painter) originally used red color (from the Latin ruber, meaning red, and minium, meaning red lead), I make the drawings of the Rose Garden series in red pencil. The repetitive fine red lines creates a pinkish vibration that translates gentle closeness. To enliven the paintings, l use stones and plants that echo the materials used in ancient scriptorium: garnet, turquoise, hematite, tourmaline, tiger-eye, amazonite, indigo, and more. The theme of the rose garden itself comes from the tradition of the hortus conclusus, enclosed garden. It is a sacred space where intimacy and connectedness can happen in safety.

My true value is the value of Life
No matter which stories happen
inside or outside of me
My true value is the value of Life
The sap of the Earth and the one in my veins
No matter how many people suffer in the world
My true value is the value of Life
The cells of the trees and the roots in my heart
The fur of the land and the grass on my head
No matter how many unresolved issues
My true value is the value of Life
The sun and the moon
ebb and flow
in my flesh
No matter how many people die everyday
without knowing their own worth
Despite all the people I cannot help
All the mistake I made
All the ones I hurt
Despite everything I don’t understand
Everything I don’t know
Everything I can’t change
Despite the AI talking to me on the phone
The Life I am knows its true value
Happiness is a law that supports my organs
Despite all my fears, and the fears around me
Despite the abuses, injustices, lies, and pains I see
And whatever garbage is thrown at me`
Despite all the dramas and the comedies
The fierce approbation of my blood reminds me that
I have the value of Life.
